The Power of Nasaya

Nasya

Nasya is the Ayurvedic practice of lubricating the nasal passageway with herb-infused oil to moisturize, clear & protect the nasal cavities, support the intake of prana~ breath, & promote mental clarity.

Many of our students and customers have shared they have allergies. a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing this time of year. A simple way to assist in clearing your nasal airway and limiting the production of histamine in the nasal mucosa is to OIL the nostrils daily or often..

According to Ayurveda, our nose is a direct route to the brain and doorway to consciousness. Our nostrils are the grand entrance so to speak(2 open doors) for prana~ AKA our life force.

Our life is a force of nature and that force takes a magnificent journey into the body through the grand entrance & doorway of the breath. To breathe with ease that ensures the flow of Prana through the head and entire body is a reflection of our health and wellness.

When an excess of secretions ~bodily fluids accumulates in the sinuses, throat, nose, or head, the best pathway of elimination is through the nose.

Super Nasya Oil (or an herb infused sesame oil) can help facilitate this natural cleansing process. The benefits of doing daily nasal lubrication are amazing. It’s similar to brushing your teeth each day once you start you can’t do without it. Moisturizing and lubricating the inside of your nose is soothing and helps to protect the nasal passages, relieving any stagnation in the sinuses, mitigating temporal-head tension, and soothing accumulated stress. Traditionally speaking, Nasya Oil can improve the quality of your voice, strengthen your vision, and assist in encouraging mental clarity.

I remember my very first nasaya experience 16 years ago. I was totally impressed with the instant results from putting a few drops of oil in each nostril. It was an insanely dry & hot summer day. My nose felt the unyeliding dryness and sinus pressure, along with a headache. I was in an Ayurveda course and we administered nasya to each other. After receiving a few drops of the warm herbal oil I felt more energized, relieved, & saturated with moist nasal passages. I became a believer since that experience. Nasya has been an essential ritual in my early morning Ayurvedic routine al most every day.

Subtle Effects of Nasya

Nasya offers support for any imbalances related to the 3 sub-doshas

that govern inhalation, processing emotions, and lubrication

Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pitta & Tarpaka Kapha.

Prana Vayu

When prana vayu is out of balance, a person may experience chronic anxiety, sleepless nights, an inability to concentrate, and neurological disorders. Prana vayu is located in the cranial cavity. It moves inward and downward in the head and is responsible for our inhalation and the movement of the mind, including our perception, sensations, feelings, thoughts, and emotions.

Prana Vayu and how it flows is determined by our thoughts and plays a role in our emotional response. If the mind has excess movement, is unstable, or there is excess dryness in the body, it can disturb our nervous system. This can impact the quality of how we breathe and, in turn, affect the flow of  prana throughout our body.

Sadhaka Pitta

Sadhaka pitta is considered the link between the heart and mind - it is known as the caretaker of the heart and the seat of consciousness, that resides in the heart & brain. This sub-dosha is responsible for understanding, knowledge, and comprehension. Sadhaka Pitta helps process our thoughts, feelings, and emotions intellectually by transforming and assimilating for positive emotional maturity.

Through the heart, it fosters compassion, understanding, and sharing the magnificent manifestations of love. When out of balance, there could be challenges with digesting or dissolving thoughts and emotions, the ability to discern, overwhelming fear, anger, attachment, and difficulties related to memory.

Tarpaka Kapha

Tarpaka Kapha is predominantly present in the white matter that nourishes our brain. It’s present in the CSF - that surrounds soft brain tissue as well as the spinal cord. Tarpaka Kapha provides nourishment and fosters contentment to our nervous system & nerve cells. It is a protective layer that lubricates the sinuses and nasal cavity as well..

With its inherent ability to retain and record, tarpaka kapha holds on to memories that can either protect us or, when out of balance~crystallize, making it challenging to shift our thoughts, transform emotions, or change those old patterns.

When tarpaka kapha is out of balance, it can cling to negative memories, foster stagnation, and create congestion, dull our sense of smell, and even foster memory loss, lethargy, sadness, and emotional instability.

Prana is movement (Vata)

Sadhaka is transformation(Pitta)

Tarpaka is protective nourishment(Kapha)

All three of these sub-doshas work synergistically and are important for proper brain functioning. They work individually and they are also work in tandem when out of balance.
